Many birds are steeped in lore, but the owl is a raptor with no shortage of superstitions. Owls have long been viewed as harbingers of bad luck and even death. In some cultures, owls symbolise inner wisdom, change, transformation, and intuitive development. The Romans and Greeks once believed that witches could actually transform themselves in owls. Believe it or not, some people once actually harboured the notion that an owl calling near a home of a newborn baby could cause the child to die or even grow up to be a witch.
