One of the meanings of superstition in the Oxford English dictionary is a belief that is unfounded or irrational. Some see all religious belief as unfounded and irrational, which may lead them to believe that religion is a form of superstition. The Satanic Panic was a societal fear of the occult and is one of the most famous, prolonged mass media scares in history. Of course, none of this would have gone much further than churches if it wasn’t for the major networks turning a nothing story into headlines. They also looked at the rising teenage suicide rate and used heavy metal as a scapegoat, instead of family breakups, drug abuse, economic uncertainty, and the increasing access to guns. The term Hail Yourself (often associated with Satanism) encourages self-empowerment, self-acceptance, to recognise the godliness within yourself, and to celebrate one’s individuality.
