People have always tried to bring certainty to their lives by trying to foresee what awaits them just around the corner. People who believe in fortune telling hold superstitious beliefs that their future fortune is predetermined, and that their future can be predicted by fortune tellers based on information about basic external factors such as their birthdates. Fortune-telling in Britain was formerly included under the crime of witchcraft and was made punishable by death under the Statute of 1563. This act was repealed by George II (1683-1760), who ordained that no prosecution should thereafter be made on a charge of witchcraft and that all persons professing to occult skill or undertaking to tell fortunes might be sentenced to imprisonment for one year, made to stand pillory, and pledge future good behaviour. Divination seems to have emerged from our knowing the inevitability of death. We know that our time is limited and that we want things in our lives to happen in accordance with our wishes. Realising that our wishes have little power, we have sought technologies for gaining knowledge of the future and to gain power over our own lives.
